The reading experience isn't always linear—sometimes you put a book down for a week, a month, or longer. As a reader, you don't want to miss out on the rest of a good book; and as an author, you don't want your readers to lose their momentum in your story. We've been thinking of how to solve both issues for some time. That's why we're excited to introduce Recaps for select audiobooks on Spotify: a powerful new feature designed to help listeners jump back into stories they've put down — and, for authors and publishers, built to bring your audience back to complete more of your stories.

Built with Authors and Publishers in Mind

Recaps were created to help authors and publishers grow their business by re-engaging audiences who might otherwise fall away. To ensure that the tool meets their needs, as well as those of listeners, we developed Recaps in close collaboration with key input from publishing partners.

Currently, Recaps are available for select English-language titles on iOS — and we're looking forward to expanding soon. To make sure that Audiobook Recaps provide as valuable of an experience as possible, we're launching this feature in Beta, giving us space to collect feedback from listeners, authors, and publishers along the way).

How Audiobook Recaps Work

Listening comes first: A Recap will only be available if the user has already begun listening to your audiobook.

Seamless return: Coming back to an audiobook, listeners have the option to tap the Recap button to hear a tailored summary of what's happened so far—up until only where they left off.

No spoilers: Recaps only cover the parts of the story that readers have already heard, catching listeners up without ruining what comes next.

Made responsibly with AI: Spotify is committed to protecting the work of authors and narrators. We are not using audiobook content for LLM training purposes or voice generation.

What This Means for Authors and Publishers

Recaps are being rolled out gradually, and we'll be paying attention to the feedback that we receive from our beta launch.

Here's what you should know:

• Recaps are currently available for a limited selection of English-language titles.
• If you are a publisher, or self-publish through Spotify for Authors, your titles will become eligible for Recaps beginning December 13, 2025. Eligibility doesn't guarantee Recaps availability — Spotify will expand Recaps at our discretion amongst eligible titles.
• Don't want Recaps?
  • If you publish with Spotify for Authors, you have the option to opt-out your titles from eligibility beginning today.
  • If you don't self-publish through Spotify for Authors, your publisher can share more information about Recaps for your titles.

Audiobook Recaps are just the beginning of how we're helping listeners stay connected to the stories they love, while helping authors and publishers build stronger relationships with their audience. We can't wait to see how Recaps bring readers back to enjoy your stories and empower your work.
